Vice Presidential Debate puts Fly to Sleep

Compared to the presidential debate last week, Wednesday’s vice presidential debate was pretty presidential.
Mike Pence was so calm he wouldn’t hurt a fly. At least he didn’t seem bothered by the fly resting on his head while he expressed his support for law enforcement.
That fly wouldn’t have stood a chance if Barack Obama were still around.
The President’s Doctor and Chief of Staff off Message

The president’s doctor, Sean Conley, gave a cheerful update on his covid condition Saturday morning at Walter Reed Hospital. He proclaimed Trump to be “in exceptionally good spirits and doing well.”
But the president’s Chief of Staff Mark Meadows soon stepped on Dr. Conley’s message by leaking an update of his own:
The President’s vitals over the last 24 hours were very concerning and the next 48 hours will be critical in terms of his care. We are still not on a clear path to a full recovery
So there.
President’s Doctor
On Sunday Doctor Conley responded in his own defense:
I was trying to reflect the upbeat attitude of the team, that the president, that his course of illness has had. Didn’t want to give any information that might steer the course of illness in another direction
Apparently the virus was asleep at the wheel. The docs gave Trump oxygen, pills and shots and sent him back to the White House on Monday.
Tough Guy from Scranton Meets Bully from Queens

Joe Biden has always presented himself as a tough guy from Scranton. Must be a tough place, he moved to Delaware at age 10.
Any way, Gerald Seib thinks Trump wanted to reposition Biden as a weak, woke, swamp guy from the beltway. So be beat the crap out of him in Tuesday’s debate.
Seib says it was a big gamble for Trump. And early reviews say the president made a bad bet.
Hypocrisy among Politicians over RBG Replacement

Hypocrisy in defense of virtue is no vice… or something like that.
Justice Antonin Scalia died in February 2016, ten months before the November presidential election.
So President Obama did his duty and nominated Merrick Garland to fill the opening. But Majority Leader Mitch McConnell refused to bring the nomination to the Senate floor for a vote.
Here’s what McConnell had to say about that:
“The American people may well elect a president who decides to nominate Judge Garland for Senate consideration,” McConnell said. “The next president may also nominate someone very different. Either way, our view is this: Give the people a voice.”
The already touchy Democrats weren’t happy.
Hypocrisy
But here’s what Senator Schumer had to say in 2007 when George W. Bush was president:
I will recommend to my colleagues that we should not confirm a Supreme Court nominee EXCEPT in extraordinary circumstances.”
And here’s what Schumer had to say when the Notorious RBG joined her good friend Nino in eternal rest:
The American people should have a voice in the selection of their next Supreme Court Justice. Therefore, the vacancy should not be filled until we have a new president.
Oh, and then there’s Lindsey Graham explaining in 2016 why Judge Garland shouldn’t be confirmed:
I want you to use my words against me. If there’s a Republican president in 2016 and a vacancy occurs in the last year of the first term, you can say Lindsey Graham said let’s let the next president, whoever it might be, make that nomination
Distractions from Covid in the Middle East
A lot of distractions are out there – forest fires, molotov cocktail fires, pandemics and bad hair days. And now the final insult: President Trump signs peace deals in the Middle East! What will he steal next, President Obama’s Nobel Prize?
