Centerpiece
“I’ve been struck by the speed and decisiveness of his move to the center,” Will Marshall, of the Progressive Policy Institute, said of Obama – in June of 2008! Now that he’s taken over health care, autos, and the internet, could Bam be at it again? Carl Leubsdorf, in the Dallas Morning News, says Democratic presidents have to move to the center to survive.
Harry Reid Ruined My Day
The senate tried to pass a last minute, $1.2 trillion, 1,924 page spending bill last night. The bill had 6,630 earmarks totalling $8 billion. Even dead senators got earmarks – $8 Million for the Edward Kennedy institute and $10 million for the John Murtha Foundation! The Wall Street Journal called it “The 111th Congress’s Final Insult“. A cartoonist can’t ask for much more than that. Then, just as a 40 hour reading of the bill was about to begin, Harry Reid pulled the plug and spoiled all the fun. He ruined 3 days worth of cartoons. I think I’ll call my congressman.
Federal Power
A federal judge ruled that the federal government doesn’t have the power to make you go out and buy something you otherwise wouldn’t – health care in this case. The government claims its constitutional power to regulate interstate commerce gives it the right to do just that.
Nat Hentoff doesn’t think any clause of the constitution gives the government the right to assassinate its own citizens who become jihadists.
Poker Face
While endorsing the Obama tax deal during his Friday presser monologue, Bill Clinton cited Charles Krauthammer’s view that the deal was a big win for the Democrats. They just don’t recognize it. Maybe Obama is following Reagan’s advice that you can accomplish anything if you don’t care who gets the credit. It’s enough to make a Republican cry.
