It’s Time for Unity at Home and Abroad

It’s time for unity. And Joe Biden wants to let bygones be bygones. No hard feelings about President Trump being a Russian agent and all.

President Xi in China has even stronger feelings for unity. He’s bringing Hong Kong closer to mainland China. Much closer.

The WSJ reports Hong Kong authorities booted four pro-democracy legislators last week. And then the remaining pro-democracy contingent resigned.

Hong Kong’s fate is especially important because it shows China can’t be trusted to keep its international promises. Its treaty with the U.K. promised autonomy to Hong Kong for 50 years through 2047. It was extinguished in 2020.

Georgia’s on Everybody’s Mind This Week

Georgia’s on everybody’s mind this week. Biden beat Trump by a nose and they’re doing a recount by hand. There’s also the runoff for two U.S. Senate Seats, with Mitch McConnell’s leadership hanging in the balance.

Meanwhile, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer’s General Sherman act wasn’t helpful. But it still looks like a lost cause for Donald Trump.

Oh, and the Masters is being played in November. Must be 2020.

Snobs vs Deplorables in 2020 Election

Snobs vs Deplorables

This election was about “Snobs” vs “Deplorables” (or “Chumps” in Joe Biden’s case). And here was Howard Stern to prove it in May:

“I don’t hate Donald,” he continued. “I hate you for voting for him, for not having intelligence. For not being able to see what’s going on with the coronavirus, for not being able to see what the Justice Department is doing. I hate you, I don’t want you here.”

And here’s Robert De Niro now:

“I’m not like political, but I was so angry and so enraged and confounded that he would actually behave the way he did and that people bought it,”

Virus Pandemic in Team Biden’s Court

The virus pandemic is in Team Biden’s court now. And, as luck would have it, they got an assist from Pfizer’s announcement that a 90% effective vaccine is on the way.

President Trump wasn’t happy about Pfizer’s timing. And it looks like the vaccine will be here before his concession speech.

Shy Trump Voters Not so Mythical After all

Shy Trump voters proved to be more than a myth.

There’s no such thing as a shy Trump voter

That was The Washington Post one day before the election.

The polling crisis is a catastrophe for American Democracy

The Atlantic

And that would be The Atlantic one day after the election.

Right now, the biggest issue is the trust deficit. And pollsters did not do a good job in 2016. So if Donald Trump surprises people, if Joe Biden had a 5- or 6-point lead, my profession is done

The polling industry and the mainstream media has “never been as wrong as it was” in the 2020 presidential election

Frank Luntz

And that’s Frank Luntz two days after the election.

Why have pollsters blown two presidential elections in a row?The problem seems to be pollsters can’t get a straight answer from some Trump voters. And for good reason:

If all you hear day in and day out that Trump is an evil, racist monster, then it’s going to make it less likely you admit to supporting him, including to pollsters.

The effect of ‘shy’ voters is known among pollsters as ‘social desirability bias’, as Nate Silver of FiveThirtyEight explained in an article ahead of the election explaining why Trump could still win.
