Not Just Hair Sniffing for Joe Biden Anymore

It’s not just hair sniffing anymore. Tara Reade, a former Joe Biden senate staffer, has accused Biden of sexual assault. Uh oh! As President Obama’s point man reforming campus “rape culture” Biden helped gut due process rights for those accused of sexual assault.

Biden’s rhetoric has also employed a de facto presumption of guilt. On a 2017 conference call with campus accusers’-rights activists, Biden offered a simple message to those who alleged that they had been sexually assaulted: “I believe you.”

And during Judge Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearing Joe had this to say:

For a woman to come forward in the glaring lights of focus, nationally, you’ve got to start off with the presumption that at least the essence of what she’s talking about is real

Authoritarian Itch Gets Scratched During Pandemic

If you have an authoritarian itch, the Covid-19 pandemic provides a great opportunity to scratch it.

Andrew McCarthy and David Harsanyi write in National Review about authoritarian overreach.

A father in Colorado was briefly handcuffed for playing t-ball with his 6-year old daughter. Meanwhile, Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer shut down the sale of fruit and vegetables at garden stores. And NYC Mayor de Blasio threatened to seize churches.

Shutting down church services was a big theme:

Two days before Easter, Louisville, Ky., mayor Greg Fischer attempted to unilaterally ban drive-in church services for the most holy day in Christianity.

But U.S. District Judge Justin Walker overruled the mayor. And maybe the judge was scratching that itch himself when he claimed,  “On Holy Thursday, an American mayor criminalized the communal celebration of Easter.”

 But, it’s still best to be king. As President Trump says:

When somebody’s the president of the United States, the authority is total.

Plenty of FBI Abuse to go Around In IG Report

Eli Lake at Bloomberg thinks the FBI is lucky, in a weird sort of way. That’s because the IG report shows the FBI abuse wasn’t just aimed at the Trump Campaign. The IG also found 39 other defective FISA applications.

In the twisted politics of the Trump Era, some of bureau’s defenders might actually view this report as good news: It shows that the investigation of the Trump campaign was not necessarily politically motivated. The bureau made the same kinds of mistakes with suspects who were not connected to the Trump campaign.

 

Senator Threatens Supreme Court Justices

Senator Chuck Schumer was feeling it at an abortion rights rally outside the Supreme Court. So he threatened two justices by name. Here’s what he said:

“I want to tell you, Gorsuch! I want to tell you, Kavanaugh! You have released the whirlwind, and you will pay the price. You won’t know what hit you if you go forward with these awful decisions.”

Chief Justice Roberts was having none of it, and he rebuked Schumer:

Threatening statements of this sort from the highest levels of government are not only inappropriate, they are dangerous.”

So Senator Schumer apologized. Kind of:

I shouldn’t have used the words I did, but in no way was I making a threat. I never — never — would do such a thing.

Peacenik Gun Law March in Virginia

Virginia Governor Ralph Northam is defending the state senate’s Red Flag gun law. He was last seen defending late term abortions and apologizing for wearing blackface.

But many Virginians seem to think Northam has his ban impulse backwards. And about 20,000 of them marched in protest of the gun law.

That set off a minor media hysteria about white supremacist gun violence. But the armed marchers behaved and even cleaned up their trash.

Which didn’t stop the senate from passing the bill anyway.
