The Real NCAA Basketball Scandal
LeBron James says the NCAA is corrupt.
I’ve always heard the narrative that they get a free education, but you guys are not bringing me on campus to get an education, you guys are bringing me on it to help you get to a Final Four or to a national championship…the NCAA is corrupt, we know that. Sorry, it’s going to make headlines, but it’s corrupt.
Of course LeBron avoided corruption by ascending into the NBA straight out of high school.
Here’s The Real NCAA Basketball Scandal
The players are the only ones who don’t get paid. Legally.
Kentucky coach John Calipari thinks players should be able to get loans using their pro potential as collateral. Kind of like an advance to an author from a publisher. But what if you’re not a pro prospect? Too bad. You’re lucky to get a scholarship.
Here’s everything else you need to know about the Scandal according ESPN.
Rigged Elections
It was Donald Trump and other Republicans who fretted about rigged elections – before Trump actually won one. But now the tables have turned.
Red Flags
The kid who killed 17 former high school classmates in Parkland, Florida had a tough time getting the cops’ attention. Red flags popped up everywhere. Callers warned the Broward County Sheriff’s office 18 times. A tipster told the FBI in January, “I know he’s going to explode.”
Four cops stood outside outside the school building while inside he fired away.
Then the shooter left the building and bought a soda.
National Review’s David French says, The Parkland shooter did everything but call police and tell them the date and time of his attack. It would have been difficult for him to make his intentions more clear.
Red Flags
CNN’s Jake Tapper asked Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel, “Are you really not taking any responsibility for the multiple red flags that were brought to the attention of the Broward Sheriff’s Office about this shooter before the incident?”
The sheriff’s reply? “I’ve given amazing leadership.”
Billy Graham Joins Stoneman Douglas HS Kids
As news of the death of Billy Graham broke, friends and family of the Stoneman Douglas high school shooting victims gathered at the White House. It was tough to watch but I thought the kids and parents did a great job. The president listened respectfully with no tweeting. But he did encourage teachers to pack heat.
Here’s an editorial tribute to Rev. Graham from the WSJ (you might need a subscription). And here’s a less admiring one by George Will. John Kass of the Chicago Tribune has a good one here about the politics of guns and abortion.
By The Book
Susan Rice didn’t let the door hit her on the way out of the White House. Instead she sent herself an email.
It was time stamped 12:15 pm January 21 – the day of President Trump’s inauguration. And her self-message recapped a January 5 meeting President Obama held with top staffers.
By the Book
In that meeting Obama instructed his staff on the transfer of information to the new administration. Or the non-transfer of information as National Review’s Andrew McCarthy suspects.
At any rate, Susan Rice let the record show that President Obama insisted it be done “by the book.”
