State of the Union

“There is something entirely appropriate about holding the State of the Union address on the same day as Mardi Gras.

One is a display of wretched excess, when giddy and rowdy participants give in to reckless and irresponsible behavior.

The other is a street festival in New Orleans.”

Dana Milbank, Washington Post

Overruled

130211-_benghazi_syriaSenate testimony last week, from outgoing Defense Secretary Panetta and Joint Chiefs chairman General Dempsey, revealed that neither Obama or Hillary answered the 3 a.m. alarm on the night Ambassador Stevens was murdered in Benghazi. Panetta and Dempsey briefed the president on the situation that night at 5 p.m. Obama left the matter up to them and wasn’t heard from again until he flew to Vegas the next day and blamed the attack on a video maker.

Also it was learned that the president overruled advice from the Secretary of Defense, Secretary of State, CIA Director, and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to arm fighters in Syria.

Mad Dogs and Lap Dogs: 60 Minutes

President Obama doesn’t like dissent and he didn’t get much of it when he appeared with Hillary for a slobbery 60 Minutes interview. The president requested the interview with Steve Kroft because, as Kroft told Piers Morgan, …“he knows we’re not going to play gotcha”.

In another interview with the owner of The New Republic (also a former fundraiser), Obama trashed Fox News – again.

And here’s a Connor Friedersdorf column from the Atlantic about Steve Kroft’s “softball interviews”.

What Difference Does It Make?!

President Obama takes credit for killing Bin Laden. He claimed al Qaeda was “on it’s heels“.When an al Qaeda allied group killed Ambassador Stevens in Benghazi the white house blamed it on an obscure internet video. The video maker went to jail and Obama got re-elected. What difference does it make?

Here’s a David Ignatius analysis of “al Qaeda 2.0”.

Treasury Fat Cat

A WSJ editorial says Treasury nominee Jack Lew, as chief operating officer of Citigroup’s Alternate Investments unit, oversaw investments designed to hide mortgage risk.

“The greatest irony is that given Mr. Lew’s crisis-era resumé, he bears a remarkable resemblance to the bankers who President Obama says created the financial crisis and deserve federal investigation. But apparently there’s an exception as long as your liberal intentions are noble and you’re a loyal Democrat. Then you can get rich at one of Wall Street’s biggest failures and end up running the entire financial system.”

Here’s a Washington Post business story about Lew’s time at Citigroup. And here’s a Forbes piece titled “Wall-Street-Bonus” Lew to replace Tax-Avoider” Geithner at Treasury
