What Red Line?
During a press conference on August 20 President Obama said, “a red line for us is we start seeing a whole bunch of chemical weapons moving around or being utilized.”
Yesterday in Stockholm, he said, “I didn’t set a red line. The world set a red line.”
He didn’t build that red line. Somebody else made that happen.
Obama continued, “Keep in mind, I’m somebody who opposed the war in Iraq, and I’m not interested in repeating mistakes about basing decisions on faulty intelligence”.
Secretary of State John Kerry says he has proof that Assad gassed his own people, but then Colin Powell had proof of Saddam’s weapons of mass destruction. For good measure Kerry also insists that Syrian rebels are moderate .
Shirtless Putin says, “Kerry lies“.
Assad is accused of murdering a few hundred of his own. Ann Coulter notes that Saddam Hussein killed 50,000 plus with chemical weapons, leading up to the war Obama opposed. Bush’s invasion of Iraq so frightened Gadhafi that he gave up his weapons of mass destruction and turned in A Q Kahn, the ringleader of a world wide nuclear weapons black market.
Maureen Dowd, on the other hand, blames Bush.
Our Future Red Line Allies
Meanwhile it seems the Syrian rebels are busying themselves by executing men on their knees, and attacking a Christian village while they await our intervention in the war on Assad.
Blame Shifting in Syria
What’s with the president’s sudden interest in Congressional approval for “a shot across the bow” in Syria? Until now he’s thumbed his nose at Congress from the Dream Act to Libya. His “lead from behind” intervention in Libya created the chaos that led to the disaster in Benghazi.
Andrew McCarthy says there are no moderates in Syria and that the anti-Assad forces are dominated by al Qaeda friendly mujahadeen. All those in favor of killing Assad say Allahu Akbar!
Blame Shifting
Peter Wehner, in Commentary, says Obama “is furious about the box he’s placed himself in”.
“What he does see is a political (and geopolitical) disaster in the making. And so what is emerging is what comes most naturally to Mr. Obama: Blame shifting and blame sharing. Remember: the president doesn’t believe he needs congressional authorization to act. He’s ignored it before. He wants it now. For reasons of political survival. To put it another way: He wants the fingerprints of others on the failure in Syria.”
Update:
What red line? I didn’t set any red line. While answering a question in Sweden today, President Obama insisted that his credibility isn’t on the line, America’s is. He then proceeded to blame shift outward to “The International Community”. Surely the Solar System bears some responsibility here. Looks like Bush is finally off the hook.
Syria Red Line
Who says that President Obama’s words don’t matter. He warned the president of Syria not to gas his own people. A gas attack meant crossing a red line that would trigger a U.S. response. Apparently we’re down with killing 100,000 Syrians by other means.
Anyway, It looks like Assad has jumped the Red Line. Now we have to respond or lose credibility and, according to the polls, the American people have no stomach for another war.
Going it Alone in Syria
Not only that, the British Parliament voted not to help. It’s the first time they’ve denied the Prime Minister a request for military backing since 1782, when Parliament gave up on the American colonies! Maybe Obama should have kept the Churchill bust.
So far our leader says he’ll go ahead without the British, UN, or United States Congress. The French are still in. Freedom Fries any one?
Obama Phone
Has your Obama Phone been bugged yet? Even some Dems are upset with the president over domestic spying. Not to mention some Republicans who have supported NSA surveillance in the past.
Ed Finley at the Detroit News wants Obama Phones defunded.
Lawgiver
President Obama insists that he’s not a dictator or a king, but if Congress won’t act he will. How’s that work? He picks and chooses the laws he likes. In a speech last week he claimed the right to unilaterally “tweak” the Affordable Care Act because this is not a “normal political environment” – meaning Congress won’t do what he wants.
Funny, he didn’t have any trouble getting Congress’s cooperateration when they tweaked the law to subsidize the health care government workers must now buy through the exchanges. No one else earning$175,000 gets a subsidy.
George Will offers a pithy analysis of Obama’s Nixonian tendencies here.
