Helen Thomas Sketchbook
Helen Thomas was forced into early retirement yesterday at age 89. (Go here for Dana Milbank’s column. Go here to watch Helen torment Robert Gibbs.)
Helen was recorded saying that Jews should get out of Palestine and go back to Poland. With that she bolted across the borders of acceptable free speech. She now exists beyond the pale along with cartoons of Muhammad and questions about the Civil Rights bill.
I wrote a children’s book with Helen and I’ve heard her talk this way about the Middle East many times. Helen’s opinions aren’t my opinions but they’ve been widely known for years.
Go here to see Ari Fleisher demand Helen’s resignation (reason enough for her to stay on).
President Canute
Obama accepted the Democratic nomination two years ago by remarking that the occasion marked the moment when “our planet began to heal” and the “rise of the oceans began to slow”. Mark Steyn riffs on the subject here.
Presidents Without Borders
Obama pronounced us not defined by our borders and promptly joined Mexican President Felipe Calderon in trashing Arizona for its immigration law. Senator Arlen Specter, now spurned by both democrats and republicans, doesn’t find himself bound by much of anything. At the end of Clinton’s impeachment trial in 1999, Specter relied on Scottish Law to vote “not proved”
Greek Bail Out
Unfortunately, the real Greek Chorus, public union workers in the streets of Athens, sang a different tune – Burn Down The Banks! To that end they sacrificed 3 lives. A small price to pay to preserve a way of life that includes a 2 month pay bonus every year and a full salary pension pension at 60. Go here for more Greek geek from David Ignatius.
