Head in the Game

101018bokloresA NYT study last summer found that concussions suffered in the NFL are more serious injuries than previously thought. This seems to have inspired many defensive backs. Helmet to helmet blows surged last week-end. Steeler, James Harrison, alone bagged two Browns within a few minutes on Sunday. The only penalty called was a delay of game on Alex Mack for kicking the ball. Should have kicked a helmet – with a head in it. The NFL closed the barn door with an announcement today that it is cracking down. Here’s an ESPN story.

Udpate: The NFL fined Harrison $75,000 for his work.

Peter Baker caught the prez in a reflective mood in yesterday’s NYT Magazine piece titled “The Education of a President”. Here’s an excerpt.

Obama Identified what he called ‘Tactical Lessons’ from his presidency. He let himself look too much like ‘the same old TAX-AND-SPEND LIBERAL Democrat’. HE REALIZED TOO LATE that ‘there’s no such thing as shovel-ready projects’ when it comes to PUBLIC WORKS.

101015bokloresThe National Organization for Women endorsed Jerry Brown for governor of California last week. A week earlier Brown, or an advisor, was recorded calling his opponent, Meg Whitman, a whore. Here’s the story in the Daily Caller. After its endorsement, NOW called for the firing of whoever dropped the “W” word.

Nasty Free Speech

101008bokloresThe creeps who protest at the funerals of dead soldiers appeared before the Supreme Court on Wednesday. They were sued by the father of Matthew Snyder, a marine whose funeral they picketed. The protesters are led by a preacher named Fred Phelps. Their beef is with homosexuality and they claim that dead soldiers are God’s punishment. The thing is, unless the Supreme Being files a brief, they may be well within their rights. A 1988 court ruling, Hustler Magazine v. Falwell, unanimously upheld the right to nasty speech unless it can be proven false.
