The Donald Evolves
David Harsanyi at the Federalist thinks the first Republican debate was awesome. I agree. The field looked strong all the way down to Carly Fiorina on the JV team.
Then there’s The Donald. He refused a pledge not to pull a Ross Perot if doesn’t win the nomination. Why give up the leverage, he reasoned. Makes sense I guess. And he said he made Hillary attend his wedding by giving her money. Also believable.
When asked how he came to change his views on taxes and abortion he said he evolved.
Cecil Saves Planned Parenthood
Cecil the Lion chased baby body parts off the front page. The Planned Parenthood scandal isn’t popular with the Washington Elite. The Obama administration thinks Planned Parenthood adheres to the the highest ethical standards for fetus crunching. The Senate had no stomach for defunding the organization.
It wasn’t just the lion story. As of July 24 Michael Barone says there were 773 stories about the confederate flag compared to 31 on the Planned Parenthood video.
Don’t Crush
Planned Parenthood defends itself by saying the organs harvested from aborted fetuses go to research that saves lives. If that’s the case it’s a generational wealth and health transfer. Most of the saved lives belong to older people. The survival rate of the fetuses is zero.
Kirsten Powers, in a column titled “Crush Planned Parenthood”, quotes a friend:
My friend and former Obama White House staffer Michael Wear tweeted, “It should bother us as a society that we have use for aborted human organs, but not the baby that provides them.”
Ken Blackwell says that when it comes to abortion, black lives don’t matter.
Planned Parenthood Parts is Parts
Parts is parts to Deborah Nucatola.
Nucatola is the senior director of medical research at Planned Parenthood. She was caught on video discussing her method for harvesting body parts from the babies she aborts.
“I’d say a lot of people want livers”, she explained while swirling a glass of wine. In order to deliver quality parts Nucatola uses ultrasound to locate an organ and then “crushes” the baby above and below the desired part.
This use of ultrasound outraged Michele Malkin.
Think about that. Planned Parenthood has officially declared it “torture” for women to see their unborn children through ultrasound before submitting to abortion.
Her point is that Planned Parenthood fights laws requiring that women be shown fetal ultrasounds before an abortion can be performed.
Others were at pains to point out that this is all legal. Maybe but it seems a little beside the point.
Here’s Kevin Williamson, in National Review:
Abortion is a brutal business — emphasis on business. Planned Parenthood takes in a half-billion dollars a year in government money; its financial footprint is the same size as that of the NCAA.
Religious Freedom
Religious freedom has been taking a beating.
A National Review editorial last week made the point that during the Clinton administration Democrats in Congress felt the Supreme Court had too narrow a view of religious liberty. As a result the Religious Freedom Restoration Act was passed with bipartisan support and signed into law by President Clinton.
Along comes the Affordable Care Act (ACA), …which empowered the Obama administration to issue regulations that burdened a religious liberty..
This leaves Democrats in a political pickle. They passed a law to protect religious freedom, but they do not desire to protect religious freedom when doing so interrupts their risible war-on-women soap opera.
Senator Udall, in his rhetoric, has been particularly dishonest about this, characterizing the Hobby Lobby decision as mandating that women “have to ask their bosses for a permission slip to access common forms of birth control.” In fact, the decision does no such thing: Hobby Lobby has nothing to do with the right to do anything, but rather with the right to not do something.
Elsewhere on the religious freedom front, the Islamic State of Iraq has ordered Christians to either pay jizya (a religious tax), convert to Islam, or die.
