Words Matter

160615words
For a guy who’s all about narratives President Obama doesn’t seem to think words matter anymore.

He still refuses to use the term “radical Islam“. He says it wouldn’t make any difference. On Tuesday he angrily asked, “What exactly would it accomplish? What exactly would it change?”

The WSJ editorial board thanked him for asking and answered his question:

If the U.S. is under attack, Americans deserve to hear their President say exactly who is attacking us and why. You cannot effectively wage war, much less gauge an enemy’s strengths, without a clear idea of who you are fighting.

Mr. Obama’s refusal to speak of “radical Islam” also betrays his failure to understand the sources of Islamic State’s legitimacy and thus its allure to young Muslim men. The threat is religious and ideological.

Islamic State sees itself as the vanguard of a religious movement rooted in a literalist interpretation of Islamic scriptures that it considers binding on all Muslims everywhere. A small but significant fraction of Muslims agree with that interpretation, which is why Western law enforcement agencies must pay more attention to what goes on inside mosques than in Christian Science reading rooms.

Words Matter

During the 2008 campaign Hillary Clinton dismissed Obama’s gift for gab as “just words.” Obama responded with this speech:

“Don’t tell me words don’t matter: ‘I have a dream,’ just words? ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal,’ just words? ‘There is nothing to fear, except fear itself,’ just words?’”

Everything but Islamists

islamists

President Obama blamed the Orlando shootings on hate and guns but not Islamists. He seemed to say we brought it on ourselves. At least he didn’t blame it on a movie.

“This massacre is therefore a further reminder of how easy it is for someone to get their hands on a weapon that lets them shoot people in a school, or in a house of worship, or a movie theater, or in a nightclub. And we have to decide if that’s the kind of country we want to be. And to actively do nothing is a decision as well.”

The killer worked as a security guard, had firearms training, and passed strict background checks.

Newt Gingrich took the opportunity to kick dirt on the shoes of Washington elites.

“They don’t want to tell us the truth about the world, they don’t want to tell us the truth about trade deals, they don’t want to tell us the truth about who is getting payoffs in Washington, and they don’t want to tell us the truth about Islamic terrorism.”

Cincinnati King Kong

In the latest remake of King Kong, Harambe The Gorilla played the great ape role admirably and the four year old boy filled in nicely for Fay Wray, Jessica Lange, or Naomi Watts as you prefer.

The misunderstood gorilla and bad old humans theme remains popular. But not everyone is all blubbery about Harambe’s demise. Steelers linebacker Vince Williams tweeted that he’s better off dead than in Cincinnati.

Cincinnati Gorilla, Chicago Humans

Well, it’s not every day a gorilla is gunned down in Cincinnati. But for human beings in Chicago it kind of is an every day experience. CBS News Chicago tracks shootings here.

Hillary’s Lies

Hillary's Lies

The State Department Inspector General’s Report says Hillary broke the rules by using her home brew email server for official business. Hillary has insisted that her email setup was “allowed by the Stat Department”. It wasn’t. She lied.

Hillary’s Lies

Jonah Goldberg says Hillary’s lies are different than The Donald’s lies. His are spontaneous. Hers are premeditated.

Unlike Donald Trump’s lies, which he usually vomits up spontaneously like a vesuvian geyser, Clinton’s were carefully prepared, typed up, and repeated for all the world to hear over and over again…

Meanwhile, Clinton — who lives many time zones away from the word “entertaining” — is marketing herself as the mature and upstanding grown-up. She does nothing spontaneously. And that means all of her lies are premeditated.
