Harry Reid Ruined My Day
The senate tried to pass a last minute, $1.2 trillion, 1,924 page spending bill last night. The bill had 6,630 earmarks totalling $8 billion. Even dead senators got earmarks – $8 Million for the Edward Kennedy institute and $10 million for the John Murtha Foundation! The Wall Street Journal called it “The 111th Congress’s Final Insult“. A cartoonist can’t ask for much more than that. Then, just as a 40 hour reading of the bill was about to begin, Harry Reid pulled the plug and spoiled all the fun. He ruined 3 days worth of cartoons. I think I’ll call my congressman.
Melt Down
President Obama called Replublicans “hostage takers” and the left of his own party “sanctimonious”. Peggy Noonan thinks this shows he hates his own tax deal.
Obama’s announcement of his tax deal drove his own party bonkers. Bernie Sanders conducted a 9 hour Senate filibuster. Meanwhile someone in the House Democratic Caucus muttered “f… the president”.
Wormhole
Sixties style future House leader, Don Draper, a.k.a. “John Boehner”, called the Democrats tax bill “chicken crap” (Politico). Meanwhile, the president is focused on saving us from having to “duck and cover” by pressing on with his New START Treaty (George Will, Washington Post).
Contempt for Congress
Charlie Rangel says he was denied due process because he walked out of his ethics hearing and wasn’t there to defend himself. After spending $2 million of his campaign funds on legal council he decided things had gone far enough when it came to his own money. The ethics panel found him guilty.
All Ears
Mitch McConnell has signed on to Republican plans to end earmarks. The last time they were in power, the earmark habit got the GOP thrown out on their ears.
