Nasty Free Speech
The creeps who protest at the funerals of dead soldiers appeared before the Supreme Court on Wednesday. They were sued by the father of Matthew Snyder, a marine whose funeral they picketed. The protesters are led by a preacher named Fred Phelps. Their beef is with homosexuality and they claim that dead soldiers are God’s punishment. The thing is, unless the Supreme Being files a brief, they may be well within their rights. A 1988 court ruling, Hustler Magazine v. Falwell, unanimously upheld the right to nasty speech unless it can be proven false.

I’ve heard that when your opponent is self-destructing, the best thing to do is get out of the way. Unless you’re a Republican, in which case, you’ll probably want to begin a movement to repeal the 14th amendment. The most likely outcome of that effort according to Linda Chavez is no Hispanic Republicans. She makes her case in a WSJ column. A federal judge has stopped Arizona’s new immigration law. Here’s a good Washington Post story by Roberto Suro that explains where the Arizona law came from and where it may may be headed.
Fishy in Miami
Guys propose marriage on the Jumbotron all the time at sporting events so why shouldn’t LeBron let down the home town fans on national tv – for a second time, if we’re counting playoff performances? The thing is, LeBron loves the spotlight so much it’s possible he was using his ESPN infomercial to make a confession.
By dumping on his Cleveland teammates again, this time to run off with Dwade and Heronimous Bosh, could he be guilty of collusion?
According to the same ESPN (this time wearing its reporters hat), NBA commisioner David Stern has said, “he’s been assured at the “highest level” that there will be no sitdown among LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and the other superstars”. Well, that’s good to know. Otherwise it might seem suspicious that the threesome signed with the same team for less – 30 million less in James case – than they could have earned elsewhere.
