Jimmy’s Late Night Opinions

jimmy's late night opinions

Harvey Weinstein probably won’t have much to say about current events for a while, but Jimmy Kimmel will. The comedian turned policy wonk has had a lot to say about health care and gun control lately thanks to the failed Graham-Cassidy bill and the Las Vegas massacre.

As for Harvey Weinstein’s escapades? Well, Jimmy had a lot to say about Donald Trump.

Jimmy’s Late Night Opinions

What if you don’t like Jimmy’s late night opinions? On CBS Sunday Morning he said, “I mean, you don’t have to watch the show. You don’t have to listen to what I say.”

“Yeah, I mean, I saw, I don’t know if it was a study or a poll, some combination of those two things, that, like, three years ago I was equally liked by Republicans and Democrats. And then Republican numbers went way down, like 30% or whatever. And, you know, as a talk show host, that’s not ideal. But I would do it again in a heartbeat.”

Despite the Deplorable decline his ratings are up 11% from a year ago..

Stephen Paddock Face of Evil

Stephen Paddockface of evilStephen Paddock was a 64 year old retired accountant reportedly worth 2 million dollars. He owned rental properties, was a certified pilot and owned two airplanes. Not exactly my idea of the face of evil. But he had 23 firearms in his hotel room and shot nearly 600 people, killing 59 of them.

Face of Evil

He was also a casino gambler. He held the “highest status” at Caesars Entertainment. Does “highest status” go to people who win a lot of Caesars’ money? Did he blow his 2 million dollar fortune?

Whatever happened, it doesn’t seem like he suddenly went haywire. His killing spree was meticulously planned.

David French in National Review thinks the case is very very strange.

Alt Right Antifa Moral Equivalency

moral equivalency Democrats, the media, CEOs, Republican leaders, conservative pundits, and Mexican bandits hammered Trump for saying there were two sides to the Charlottesville brawl.

And if there were any “very fine people” in Charlottesville, as Trump said there were, they weren’t to be found among the alt right or antifa combatants. Maybe he meant very fine thugs.

Moral Equivalency

The moral equivalency thing is what really brought trouble for Trump. The idea that neo-Nazis and KKK types were the moral equals of the protesters they were fighting was too much.

Maybe, but the antifa types are pretty bad. Here’s Jonah Goldberg:

These goons and thugs oppose free speech, celebrate violence, despise dissent, and have little use for anything else in the American political tradition. But many liberals, particularly in the media, are victims of the same kind of confusion that vexed so much of American liberalism in the 20th century. Because antifa suddenly has the (alt-)right enemies, they must be the good guys. They’re not. And that’s why this debate is so toxically stupid. Fine, antifa isn’t as bad as the KKK. Who cares? Since when is being less bad than the Klan a major moral accomplishment?

So maybe it’s not moral equivalency. Just Extremely Ugly vs Very Ugly.

Tiki Torch Bigots

bigots

Images of the Klan carrying torches through the night are ugly. But the images of white nationalists parading through Charlottesville over the weekend were just plain ridiculous. They were carrying tiki torches. The kind you buy at Walmart to keep pests away from your garden party. Except in this case the pests were the bigots carrying the torches.

Tiki Torch Bigots

The CEO of the company that makes the torches rejected the free product placement:

W.C. Bradley CEO Marc Olivie told the Columbus Ledger-Enquirer on Monday that the Columbus-based company’s staff was “appalled and saddened” that the torches were “used by people who promote bigotry and hatred.”

Jeff Sessions Goes To Bat Against Gang Violence

Trump snubbed Jeff Sessions in a speech about MS-13 gang violence last week. Sessions was in El Salvador to actually do something about it.
