Move to Center
The president had to fend off angry Democrats after Republicans said “yes” to an extension of the Bush tax cuts. Democrats didn’t come away empty handed. The deal included a 13 month extension of unemployment benefits, a payroll tax reduction and lower income tax credits. No need to fend off voters. According to Gallup two thirds are okay with the deal.
Lip Service
When Friday morning’s, poorer than expected, unemployment numbers were announced (up to 9.8%), my thoughts were with the president and his split lip. From there my mind meandered to the famous David Levine caricature of LBJ showing off his abdominal scar.
Wormhole
Sixties style future House leader, Don Draper, a.k.a. “John Boehner”, called the Democrats tax bill “chicken crap” (Politico). Meanwhile, the president is focused on saving us from having to “duck and cover” by pressing on with his New START Treaty (George Will, Washington Post).
Post Election Press Conference
To Doyle McManus, of the LA Times, this isn’t 1994 when Bill Clinton said of the voters, “They sent us a clear message. I got it”. In 2010 it was all Obama could do to walk back his Nixon-like comment that those same voters are “the enemy“.
Failure to Communicate
Maybe a 55th speech on Obamacare would have set us straight. The Democrats blamed their problems on poor communication to the end.
