Al Sharpton
When I think of Al Sharpton I think of two words – Tawana Brawley. Now I think of two more – Personal Stylist.
Update:
Here’s Shelby Steele on what he calls “today’s civil rights establishment”. He says it’s leaders use poetic license to create “poetic truth” namely, that America is a racist nation.
“And here, precisely at the point of this verdict, is where all of America begins to see this hollowed-out civil-rights establishment slip into pathos. Almost everyone saw this verdict coming. It is impossible to see how this jury could have applied the actual law to this body of evidence and come up with a different conclusion. The civil-rights establishment’s mistake was to get ahead of itself, to be seduced by its own poetic truth even when there was no evidence to support it. And even now its leaders call for a Justice Department investigation, and they long for civil lawsuits to be filed—hoping against hope that some leaf of actual racial victimization will be turned over for all to see. This is how a once-great social movement looks when it becomes infested with obsolescence.”
Sock-It-To-Me
Former President Bush 41 visited the White House for the Points of Light award. He established the awards in 1989 to honor volunteerism and public service. President 44 was a gracious host and said nice things about 41.
President George Bush Sr. is confined to a wheel chair and outrageous socks.
Afghan Plan
President Obama considered Afghanistan the smart war and Iraq a dumb war with smart bombs. In 2009 he joined together a surge of 30,000 troops in Afghanistan and a plan for withdrawal.
The surge got the boot with a drawdown in 2011. Obama claimed the killing of Osama bin Laden had put al Qaeda on a path to defeat and that the tide of war was receding. Terrorists in Boston, London, Nigeria, Libya, and Syria missed that speech.
Now he’s threatening Hamid Karzai with a “zero option” which would mean the total withdrawal of U.S. troops – same as Iraq.
Line-Item Veto
Ben Sasse is the president of the Cornhusker Kickback state’s Midland University, and The Weekly Standard’s hope for the U.S. Senate. When President Obama deleted the employer mandate from the Affordable Care Act for one year Sasse said, “The president has just given himself the line-item veto, well after he had signed the bill into law.” … “Apparently Obamacare is a living, breathing document designed to grow and change with the desires of the president.”
The president, who insists he is not a king, later ruled to retain the individual mandate on the honor system.
Update: Actually, Justice John Paul Stevens says you don’t have a line item veto. From Michael McConnell in the WSJ:
“There is no provision in the Constitution that authorizes the president to enact, to amend, or to repeal statutes.”
Putin on the Ring
At last week’s G-8 Summit in Ireland (no relation to the Gang of Eight summit in Washington) Obama couldn’t interest Putin in his nuclear arms reduction scheme or in dumping blood-soaked Syrian ally Assad. This despite Obama’s post election flexibility.
Putin was also mum about Robert Kraft’s missing Super Bowl ring. The New England Patriot’s owner claims Putin stole it from him.
Mark Steyn speaks up here.
