Wedding Party
American TV networks flocked to the Royal Wedding even though viewers had to rise at 4 am to see it live. The crowd outside Westminster Abbey was pegged at 1 million. Easy for them, they were on London Time. I settled for the replay.
Strange that royalty should be so popular here in the land of the Tea Party. It’s complicated.
E.U. Time to Shine
Yesterday Germany outlawed naked shortselling. I looked it up, it has nothing to do with day trading at home in your underwear. In most short selling you have to borrow the security you are shorting and then return it at the hoped for lower price. With a naked short you don’t even borrow the the security. The euro responded to the new rule by falling to a 4 year low. The E.U. is on the hook for a trillion dollar bailout and Paul Volker says a breakup is possible.
UN Follies
Ahmadinejad gave a speech at the UN last night to empty seats and a smattering of empty suits. The Canadian delegation led a walk-out as he took the podium. Delegates were outraged by the Iranian leader’s anti-semitism. Or maybe they needed a bathroom break following Gaddafi’s stemwinder.
Lockerbie Bomber Walks
The terrorist who killed 270 innocent people by blowing up Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland was released from prison on grounds of compassion due to his terminal prostate cancer. Here’s the story. He was given a hero’s welcome by an exceedingly compassionate crowd when he returned to Libya.
