Polar Vortex

140107-polar-vortex-cartoonUntil it got really cold this week I had never heard of a polar vortex. Thanks to The Weather Channel I’ve learned it means we swapped weather with Fairbanks.

Same goes for a Derecho, which I learned last summer means rain storm.

I’ve also learned The Weather Channel has acquired naming rights to the weather. This week’s polar vortex is named Ion.

Scientists Stuck in the Ice

If you’re a traveler stranded by snow, ice, and sub zero temps this weekend you’re not alone.

Scientists Stuck in the Ice

A boatload of scientists on their way to measure the loss of antarctic sea ice got stuck in the ice. They were rescued by helicopter for evacuation to a Chinese ship – which is now also stuck in the global warming denying ice. Fortunately the scientists planned ahead and planted trees to offset their carbon emissions.

Update: I know weather isn’t climate but still…

And finally – Mark Steyn, Ship of Fools

Light Bulb Ban

140103-bulbsquad-light-bulb-banIt’s 2014 and, thanks to President Bush, the creation of incandescent light bulbs is now banned.

Light Bulb Ban

A story in the Washington Examiner blames the light bulb ban on a conspiracy between big makers of the low margin bulbs and government.

National Icon Killing Wind Farms

According to David Yarnold, president of the National Audubon Society, the Obama administration has issued a “blank check” to kill eagles and other flying species that get in the way of wind turbines. You can read the NYT story here.

Unemployment Benefits

131213-unemployment-grow-economyPresident Obama wants to increase unemployment benefits. Not just to help the unemployed, but to grow the economy.

Unemployment insurance is one of the most effective ways there is to boost our economy.

Unemployment Benefit

The science tells him that every dollar spent on unemployment creates $1.80 in growth. The WSJ calls this:

…the theory that you can increase employment by paying more people not to work…If that theory worked, the government should pay everyone not to work.

This is the same theory that told him in his first term that a trillion dollar stimulus would be the most effective tool there is to boost our economy.

Here’s a short piece from Commentary that ties together government’s self-interest in the belief in Keynesian economics and global warming.
