OHNO Proposal

Proposal for OHNO

I would like to offer a weekly Ohio editorial cartoon to the 8 Papers of OHNO. I see my role as a contract cartoonist on retainer.

My plan is to meet the need for personalized local content while spreading the cost to make it affordable. The eight papers would share the cost for me to produce the cartoon. In return each paper would receive a cartoon signed by me with the paper’s name. (Bok for the Youngstown Vindicator, Canton Repository, Beacon Journal, so forth). Or, if you prefer, simply OHNO. Or Oh NO!

I would take on an issue of statewide interest each week and, when possible, add geographical interest involving one the 8 papers. For example when hundreds of fishermen were stranded on a Lake Erie ice floe last February the story had general interest statewide but also local interest in Northwest Ohio.

I work by drawing rough sketches, developing ideas and then choosing the best one for the finished cartoon. I’ll post the sketches on this site. Editors can review the sketches and use the drop down to send comments to me. The comments can remain confidential or I can post them. There are sketches here right now waiting for you.

By 9:00 a.m. Friday (or Thursday if Friday is too hectic due to laying out weekend pages) I will file the finished cartoon. I’ll also post it on the OHNO page on my site. I’ll provide 3 finished versions:

Black and white for print

CMYK color for print

Low res color for websites

The cost to OHNO is my standard fee for corporate free-lance work: $1500 per cartoon. If the 8 papers choose to divide the cost equally it comes to $187.50 each. The price includes the black and white and color versions and web use. I will maintain the copyright but member papers will be free to use the cartoon as often as they wish (print and electronic) within their own local franchises.

If a local issue is screaming… I could probably accommodate that at a reduced rate.

I’m an experienced public speaker and guest lecturer. Both student groups (of all ages) and adults enjoy watching me draw during the speech, which is tailored to the particular audience. Arrangements could be made to speak to school groups during the day and your readership in the evening. This would be handled through Diane Nine Speakers, ninespeakers@usa.net, 202-328-6861.

That’s it. Thanks for your consideration.
