North Korea and Cuba

The president criticized Sony for giving in to North Korean blackmail by cancelling The Interview. Meanwhile he did a three for one prisoner swap with Cuba. It wasn’t quite Nixon to China but he did open the door to diplomatic recognition.

If you want to pay a visit to the 50s better book your trip now – before Cuba becomes “Americanized“.

Undocumented Children

Fifty-two thousand undocumented children have crossed the border so far this year. A union spokesman for the Border Patrol claims agents are now spending most of their time babysitting. Families in Central America believe the children will get asylum as refugees. An LA Times story documents that deportations have fallen under the Obama administration.

Under the Clinton administration the border patrol forcibly seized an undocumented Cuban political refugee. Elian Gonzalez undocumented childrenThat was six year old Elian Gonzalez. Elian wasn’t living at government expense. He was living with relatives in Miami. His mother had drowned during their escape from Cuba. Fidel Castro publicly insisted that Elian be returned to his estranged father in Cuba and AG Janet Reno complied.

JFK and a Silly Little Communist

131123 oswald-silly-little-communistKennedy Week was a very good week for Ira Stoll’s book Kennedy, Conservative. He makes the case that JFK was an anti-communist supply sider and would be a conservative today.

Maybe. Most of the other 11 year olds I knew in those days were anti-communist too. Not so sure about the supply side part – my peer-group wasn’t up to speed on tax policy. A quick look at Youtube, however, does show Kennedy was for tax cuts to increase employment and cut the deficit.

He was also in favor of civil rights. At least his wife thought so:

“He didn’t even have the satisfaction of being killed for civil rights. It’s — it had to be some silly little Communist.”

Jacqueline Kennedy, Nov. 22, 1963

Which brings us to this piece by Rich Lowry. He complains that James McAuley, in a NYT oped, pins the murder on “Dallas, a city of hate with a death wish in its eye”. (Now we know who shot JR.) Manny Fernanez, also in the NYT, blames it on an “angry anti-Washington culture”.

I think President Kennedy was swell but where can I sign up for this Angry Anti-Washington Culture?

JFK and A Silly Little Communist

The real conspiracy about the Kennedy Assassination is the myth built by the left that sinister right wing forces cut down the young president – when it was really just a silly little Communist.

Never Mind

100910bokloresFidel Castro on 50 years of the Cuban Collective – Never Mind! It may work for Michael Moore, but Castro offhandedly commented, “The Cuban model doesn’t even work for us anymore”. Here’s Jeffry Goldberg’s Lunch with Fidel in “The Atlantic”.

Oops. Here’s an update. Fidel now says, “when I say the Cuban model doesn’t work for us anymore I mean that the capitalist model doesn’t work for the U.S. anymore”. Never Mind.
